31 Days of Home Organization-Quick Tip-Closets

Image
I had planned to really delve into closet organization this month but I'm not sure that will happen with all the Halloween festivities this weekend. I go through my closet about a couple of times a year but it always seems a mess.  I chalk that up to the fact that it is super small (no walk-ins here).  The first place I start is by taking all the hanging clothing out of the closet and do a quick purge of anything I am really sure I don't need/want anymore.  I then place everything back in the closet with hangers hanging backwards ( the open part of the hook of the hanger should be facing you). Source When you wear something, put the hanger back the other way and hang the item on that hanger when you hang it back up.  After a year (or even 6 months) you will have a clear picture of what you wear and what you don't making a closet purge really easy. I got this idea from the great Peter Walsh . This is day 27 of The Nester's 31 Day Challenge ....

A quick change...

LM has these cute little hooks by the door in her room.  I got them when she was a baby from Pottery Barn Kids.  The idea was that I could hang her jackets or a backpack on there.  As time went on and she grew older, they kind of became a catch all area.  Anything that could remotely be 'hung' went on the hooks.  Which lead us to this: Obviously, the hats don't get worn everyday but I couldn't figure out a good place to put them so they didn't get damaged.  Until one day I was putting things away in the closet and noticed this space to the left of her shelves.  I took one hat over to see if it fit in the space and it did.  I headed to the tool box and got 3 nails and a hammer and ended up with this: She can reach them all, they are out of the way but she can still see them when she's picking out her clothes. So there's no fear of them being forgotten like they might have been in a drawer. I used nails so this was a no cost fix. ...

We're decluttering...

Image from marthastewart .com LM informed last night that she will be decluttering this week. Sounds good to me. I have been thinking about my closet since I read this post and saw pictures of Sarah's closet. I am amazed how streamlined her closet is. Like most of us, I have lots of clothes that don't fit me in my closet. Things I will wear as soon as I lose 10, 15, 20 pounds or (heaven forbid) I gain a few pounds. I cleaned out the closet in the spring, kind of. While I purged a bit and straightened things up I didn't really get rid of everything that doesn't fit. I think I might like the results better if I did. We have heard over and over again that most of us only wear a small percentage of our clothes. So do we really need everything we have anyway? If you're looking for me I'll be in the closet....
