2011 in Review: Books

I think it's safe to say that 2011 wasn't a banner reading year for Debra.  I'm not sure why but I hope that I can read more in 2012 as I have a list of books I want to read.  I did read the following books, which really stood out as the best in my mind:
by Kathryn Stockett

Who didn't read and love "The Help"?  If you didn't, you are missing out.  


by Holly Chamberlin

"The Summer of Us" was a quick, beachy-type read.  Entertaining for sure & my first book of Holly Chamberlin's.  She has others that I will put on my 2012 list.

"One Thousand Gifts" was another book I think most of us read.  While I enjoyed the book I have to admit it took me a while to get through it - I found her writing style a bit difficult for me but there are post-it notes and highlights throughout the book reminding me of some of the phrases I really liked or paragraphs I want to look back on.  I think it makes a great gift, too.


I did read some library books and non-fiction books I liked.  In no particular order:

  • Veganist by Kathy Freston - Kind an eating manual of sorts.
  • Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin - Ditto, but this one kind of makes you never want to eat anything again!
  • American Wasteland by Jonathan Bloom- Chronicles how much food we throw away (can you believe half of our food is thrown away?  I had no idea!)
  • Eat by Ian K Smith, MD.  Yet another food book. Interesting by lots of common sense stuff, too.
  • The Future Church:How Ten Trends are Revolutionizing the Catholic Church by John L. Allen, Jr.-Interesting if you are interested in this type of thing.
  • Fatally Flaky by Diane Mott Davidson.  I love her books and have read all but her newest, Crunch Time (see my 2012 list below).  Culinary mysteries with some yummy recipes -a bonus.
As I said, not a banner reading year for me but I hope to do better in 2012.  I have a stack waiting to read.

  • The Gift of an Ordinary Day by Katrina Kenison

well, I wouldn't consider that a bad year! That list has got lots of great titles, some that I haven't read, I'd really like to check out. Thanks! Here's also to 2012 :)

Hi Debra, You are so right about Skinny Bitch...I haven't looked at food the same way since reading this. I did read The Help and enjoyed it. I hope you have a wonderful 2012!

Should I stay or should I go...

In December (the last day of school before Christmas break) Little Miss came down with pink eye. It was her first bout with it but I was pretty sure it was contagious and the school nurse confirmed that and suggested that she go straight to the doctor. Easier said than done, apparently. LM has been going to the same pediatrician since she was born. She has been for all her scheduled checkups to this same doctor. I have only had to take her ONCE in almost 8 yrs for something other than a checkup (she had swimmers ear when she was about 2). I am not one of those people who call for an appointment every time she has a sniffle. Apparently, that doesn't mean anything. At least not at Dr. O's office. I call in the late morning to see if LM can get in for her (contagious) pink eye. The receptionist says WITH A STRAIGHT FACE 'let's see, we can see her on Jan 6th.' Changes...

I posted some photos of my living room a while back. I realized how blah and boring it looks. I appreciate the suggestions I was given. One of them was 'paint'. We had the walls painted a couple years ago so I really didn't want to do it again just yet so I had to figure what else I could do to get some color in there. I thought about painting a canvas red to match the chair ( below). After talking to my sister she suggested dipping cool whip containers in paint to make the circles and an idea was born. I bought the 3 canvases (20" X 20") at Michaels at 50% off - the three cost $21. I got a quart of paint at Lowe's ($12 - Martha Stewart's Cranberry something or the other). The blue paint was a sample size of Olympic that someone didn't buy -$1. Cool whip container and little round container I had in the kitchen - free. Fleur de lis printed off computer, traced on canvas and painted - free. So for $34 I got this new look. Very David Bro...

Lunch Box Granola...

LM's teacher gave her class an extra credit assignment for math last week.  It was a cooking assignment which helps the kids with fractions.  They had two recipe choices and she picked the lunch box granola.   I have been wanting to make granola for a while so I was happy she chose this one.   She made a list of everything I would need to buy and I headed to the store while she was at school on Friday.   $16 later , I had the missing ingredients.  I was a bit shocked that some of these items cost so much.  I felt like we just bought a grade! All the ingredients ready to go. Recipe Fresh out of the oven. The finished product. LM did everything herself except put the cookie sheet in the oven and take it out. She emailed a picture of it to the teacher and turned in a paragraph about it on Monday.  It turned out delicious and I know I'll be making it again, using up the ingredients I bought.  I don't think I'll ever buy granola again ...
