What would you do?

LM's Brownie troop is planning a trip to Sea World this summer. Sounds fun, right?

Well this morning I get an email from the leader that it is a 'girls only' trip - no parents allowed. She said it is time for them to spread their wings (they are 7 & 8 year olds). There will be 3 leaders (adult) with the girls. There are nine girls so the adult to girl ratio is not in question. I have been planning on going all along (I am not a leader) because it is about a 5 hour trip and they will be gone 2 nights. I figured I would just get a room in the same hotel and let LM stay with her troop but I would be there 'just in case'.

So, before I talk to the leader (who is a friend whom I totally trust) and come off sounding like a a crazy, over protective mother I wanted to see what you other moms out there thought.

I'll be waiting to hear from you...

Mmm...I'm not a mom so I'm not sure what I'd do. I think 7 and 8 seems pretty young to be going away on a two night trip. I remember being that age and even sleeping at a friends house across town could be a reason to call my mom to pick me up. I'd be afraid that too many little girls would get homesick. It just seems so young. I think since you are good friends with the leader, I think you should talk to her. Little girls need to be little girls. There is plenty of time to spread their wings later.

Tough one, has LM been away from home multiple nights before? How did she do? Is she comfortable with the adults that are going? I would maybe talk to her and see how she feels about being away for two nights. I agree it seems kind of young for a two day trip that far away. I'm curious to see hear how it turns out. Good luck :0)
That's a hard one. I know my eight year old wouldn't want to go without me. She's almost ready to be 'grown up' and head off, but she still needs me around for reassurance. Two nights is a long time in a little one's world.

The other thing I would consider is that 5hrs is a long distance to cover if she wants to come home. My Miss Eight has sleep overs with friends now and I get the 10pm call up to come get her, because she just wants home - you can't just jump in the car and go get her.

Comes down to how confident you are that she will be able to cope with the separation - you sound like you have complete faith in the leaders, which is a great weight off your mind. Think this is one you are going to have to go with your heart and head on.

:) Good luck.

I can tell you what I would do if it was my grand-daughter...while I was packing her suitcase, I would be packing mine too. Sorry but I think those LEADERS are a bit young to be taking my baby off. Sounds to me like they are a little stupid or there is a mom they don't want going. Sorry if that sounds mean but that's my opinion and I'm stickin to it! Lol!
